Department of History in the News: History's first annual, What You Can Do with a History Major Event (watch for notices each fall)

***History's third annual What You Can Do With a History Major event is scheduled for Friday, September 11th at 12:15pm***

On Friday, September 11, 2015 at 12:15 in the Phil Lewis Auditorium, G76, Goldwin Smith Hall. Abby Ginzberg '71, will present What You Can Do With a History Major! She will show clips of her films, discuss the critical role that archival footage plays in story-telling, and answer students' questions about her unlikely career path that all started at Cornell. Pizza will be served!

Abby Ginzberg '71 double majored in History and Government at Cornell and graduated with Honors. After graduation she moved to San Francisco, where she attended law school and then practiced for 8 years as a public interest lawyer. In the early 1980's she left the practice of law to become a filmmaker. Now as an independent documentary filmmaker, she has won a Peabody Award for her film Soft Vengeance: Albie Sachs and the New South Africa, screening on Thursday, Sept. 10th at 4:30-5:45 in McGraw Hall, Room 165 with Abby and Albie Sachs in attendance. As Consulting Producer on The Barber of Birmingham, she went to the Oscars in 2012 when the film was nominated in the Short Doc category after premiering at Sundance.

Abby Ginzberg is currently finishing her documentary on Agents of Change, which treats the story of the student strike at SF State University and the events surrounding the takeover of Willard Straight Hall by black students at Cornell in 1969. The film is co-produced and co-directed by Frank Dawson, who was one of the students in the Straight during the takeover.
